If you’ve scrolled through any health and fitness Instagram accounts or blogs recently, there’s a good chance you’ve probably heard of collagen peptides. But what exactly is this seemingly miraculous protein powder that’s been all the rave lately? Is it different than other protein powders? What makes it so special?
What is collagen?
For starters, collagen itself is the most abundant protein in our entire bodies. According to Further Food, it makes up about 90% of our connective tissue (like tendons, ligaments, and cartilage), 90% of our bone mass, and 70% of our skin. This means having adequate collagen in our diet will contribute to flexible joints, strong bones, glowing skin, and more! Unfortunately for us, our bodies’ production levels of collagen start declining in our early 20s, which is why we tend to get more wrinkly and frail as we get older 🙂 Fun, right?! But it’s never too early for prevention, so whether you’re looking to get rid of acne scars or wrinkles, collagen is to the rescue.
What do collagen peptide supplements do?
Containing 7g per one-scoop serving, collagen peptides are a protein powerhouse. As this health food has grown in popularity, more research has been done and identified even more benefits beyond those of strong hair, skin, and nails:
- Faster post-workout recovery time – amino acids are the building blocks of protein molecules, and protein is what repairs your muscles after a sweat sesh. Collagen contains a whopping 18 out of all 20 amino acids! Plus, the collagen peptides you consume as a powder or supplement are more bioavailable (meaning your body can absorb it more efficiently) than the collagen found freely in animal foods.
- Prevention of heartburn and ulcers – collagen helps regulate digestion and attracts acidic molecules as it makes its way through your body. This helps your tummy’s pH level stay in a normal range and keeps you from reaching for the Tums after a fatty meal.

Collagen peptide powder is incredible versatile because it’s virtually tasteless and textureless! These are some of the ways I like to incorporate it into my diet each day:
- Stir into hot tea or coffee with breakfast
- Add to a fruit & veggie smoothie or a bowl of oatmeal for a protein boost
- Add a scoop when using a milk alternative like almond, cashew, or rice milk to get the protein benefits of dairy (the same goes for dairy-free or non-Greek yogurts!)

Obviously I haven’t answered all the questions you might have about collagen. Honestly, I’ve barely scratched the surface of the amazing benefits this protein powder has had for me!
